#15 Zwei Sprachen, eine Karriere! - Study in English, Work in German
Show notes
The transition from university to working isn't always easy - and it can get even more complex when there is a language shift involved. For example, if you completed your degree in English but are now starting a job where you’ll need to speak or at least understand German. An English-taught degree in Germany doesn’t leave much room to fully learn the language, adapt to a new culture, and prepare for the German job market all at once.
In this episode, we’ll discuss how to navigate these transitions and share tips to tackle the challenges that come with them.
Our expert guests for this episode are:
Mohamed Elhag, coordinator for international study programmes at the Brandenburgische Technische Universität Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU). He oversees the B.Sc. and M.Sc. Environmental and Resource Management (ERM) which he studied himself 25 years ago. He has more than ten years of experience working with students who study in English, but want to work in German afterwards.
Gaoli Xiao, originally from China, is a research assistant for the Urban Rural Assembly research project at the China Center at Technische Universität Berlin. Since 2023, she has been pursuing a PhD in Sociology, Migration, and Mobility at Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn.
Gaoli invites participants for her doctoral study 'Navigating the Education-Migration Nexus in Germany: Lived Experiences of Educational Migrants from Non-EU Countries'. By centering migrant narratives, she challenges political discourses that construct international students as 'potential highly skilled migrants' or 'ideal migrants'—a framing that not only instrumentalizes their mobility but also reinforces marginalization among students whose skills are devalued in the host labor market or who face discrimination based on nationality, race, or gender.
